What is Health Insurance?
In case some of you want to know the basic concept of health insurance, let’s take a quick look at what health insurance is. The health insurance system, as briefly mentioned at the beginning, is a system that prepares funds in advance to relieve the burden of expensive medical expenses when an individual citizen suffers an accident such as illness or injury. The cost is borne jointly by the people and the state.

Health insurance is divided into two major categories. There are ‘employment subscribers’ and ‘regional subscribers’. ‘Employee subscribers’ literally refers to workers who work at a workplace, and ‘regional subscribers’ include all non-employee subscribers, the self-employed and retirees. I’ll explain it simply enough, and now let’s get to the main point.

Disadvantages of non-payment of health insurance
Most of the local health insurance subscribers must have set the monthly health insurance premium to be automatically deducted from their bank account or linked to a card. (employee subscribers are deducted from their salary and paid instead)

If you do not have enough balance in your bank account or if your credit card limit is full, you may end up with unpaid health insurance premiums without even realizing it. I have had that happen quite a few times too. There are several disadvantages to not paying health insurance premiums for any reason.

1) Late payment of health insurance
If you do not pay health insurance premiums, a late fee will be incurred.

Overdue for 30 days after payment period – 1/1500 added per day
Overdue after 30 days after payment period – 1/6000 added per day
*The late fee is limited to 2% of the amount in arrears, and the late fee is limited to 5%.

2) Payment reminder
If your health insurance is unpaid, the National Insurance Corporation will issue a payment reminder. The due date for payment within 10 to 15 days will be notified, and if payment is not made even after issuance of the reminder, a disposition for delinquency will be issued.

3) Disposition of arrears
Business place (employee subscriber) – delinquent payment if payment is not made by the payment reminder period
Local subscriber – Those who have been in arrears for more than 3 months and have property and business income of over 300,000 won

4) seizure
In addition, if you fail to pay insurance premiums by a certain period, you may have your property (house, car, securities, etc.) finally seized.
